Chemical peel treatments
Chemical peels are cosmetic procedures which involve the application of a chemical solution to the skin. This results in the top layer of skin to peel off revealing smoother and more youthful-looking

Redness is a symptom, not a diagnosis
Skin reads as red for several different reasons, and the treatments do not cross over. Getting this wrong is why people cycle through calming products for a vascular problem, or treat sensitivity with something that inflames it further.
- Vascular redness. Blood vessels sitting near the surface — diffuse flushing across the cheeks and nose, or individual visible capillaries. This is what light-based treatment addresses.
- Barrier-driven redness. Skin that is reactive, tight and flaking rather than flushed. It stings with products it used to tolerate. This needs repair, not resurfacing — and more exfoliation makes it worse.
- Inflammatory redness. Redness that comes with papules and pustules, or with flushing episodes triggered by heat, alcohol or spice. That pattern suggests rosacea.
Which treatment fits which cause
- Eczema and Barrier Treatment — $195, 65 minutes. For reactive, compromised skin. This supports a damaged barrier; it does not treat eczema itself, which is a medical diagnosis your doctor manages.
- IPL Photofacial — $300, 75 minutes. For vascular redness and visible capillaries. Intense pulsed light is absorbed by hemoglobin in the vessel rather than by the surrounding skin. A three-session package is available at a lower per-session cost, which is what diffuse redness usually needs. The full IPL guide covers the procedure, downtime and results in detail.
- Chemical Peel — $300, 60 minutes. Not a redness treatment. Listed here because it is often what people have tried already — it addresses tone and surface texture, and on reactive skin it can aggravate the redness rather than settle it.
Rosacea
If your redness comes with papules, pustules or flushing episodes, that pattern suggests rosacea, and it is worth having the diagnosis before treatment rather than after — the bumps usually need medical management that a facial cannot provide. IPL is often an effective treatment for the persistent redness and visible vessels of rosacea, and works alongside what a physician prescribes. We want the diagnosis in place first.
Before an IPL appointment
No sun exposure, tanning or self-tanner for four weeks beforehand. Treating recently tanned skin is the most common cause of a burn, whatever your baseline skin tone. Tell us about any medication you take — some antibiotics, doxycycline in particular, along with isotretinoin and a number of other drugs, make skin photosensitive. IPL is not performed during pregnancy.
IPL is also not suited to every skin tone. Deeper skin tones carry more melanin at the surface, which competes for the light energy and raises the risk of pigment change, so IPL is not offered in every case.
Sun spots and pigmentation
Brown sun spots are a different problem from redness, though IPL treats both and they are often addressed in the same session. Treated spots darken first and flake away over three to seven days. If pigmentation rather than redness is your main concern, the IPL guide goes into it properly.
One exception worth knowing: melasma is hormonally driven and can be aggravated by heat and light including IPL. It needs a different approach and is usually best managed with a dermatologist.
When to see a doctor first
A pigmented spot that is new, changing, irregular in shape or color, or simply different from your others should be looked at by a physician before any light treatment. Light can fade the appearance of a lesion that needed diagnosing instead. We will ask you to have that cleared first.
Where to find us
Aesthetic OOGII is at 450 Sutter St #1530 in Union Square, working with reactive and redness-prone skin there since 2018. Oogii is a certified medical and clinical aesthetician, and the first appointment establishes which kind of redness you are dealing with before anything is booked as a course.
Frequently asked questions
- What causes persistent facial redness?
- Most commonly one of three things: blood vessels sitting near the surface, a damaged skin barrier that has become reactive, or an inflammatory condition such as rosacea. They look similar and are treated differently, which is why the first appointment is spent working out which one you have.
- How much does redness treatment cost in San Francisco?
- At Aesthetic OOGII the Eczema and Barrier Treatment is $195 for 65 minutes, and an IPL Photofacial for vascular redness is $300 for 75 minutes. A three-session IPL package is available at a lower per-session cost.
- Can I have IPL if I have been in the sun?
- No. Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds and self-tanner for four weeks before a session. Treating recently tanned skin is the single most common cause of a burn from IPL, and that applies regardless of your baseline skin tone.
- Does IPL help rosacea?
- It is often effective for the persistent redness and visible vessels of rosacea, and it works alongside medical treatment rather than replacing it. The papules and pustules generally need a prescription. We ask that you have the diagnosis from a physician before starting a course.
- Is IPL safe for my skin tone?
- Not for every tone. IPL targets pigment, so deeper skin tones carry more competing melanin at the surface and face a higher risk of pigment change. It is not offered in every case, and we would rather say so than treat cautiously and hope.
- My skin stings with products it used to tolerate. Is that the same problem?
- That is usually barrier damage rather than vascular redness, and it is often the result of over-exfoliating. Light treatment is the wrong answer for it. The Eczema and Barrier Treatment is built for this, and the first step is usually removing things from your routine rather than adding them.
